Startups in South Africa

South Africa has the continent's deepest capital markets and its startups raise in ways few others can: local-currency bonds, bank-backed debt and domestic growth funds alongside venture equity. This page lists the South African companies in Propel's records, most recently funded first, with every round traced to its source.

Understanding the ecosystem

South African startups raised $78.2 million between July and September 2026, up from $18.3 million in the second quarter. Moment's $22 million Series A was the largest equity round, Bridgement raised R330 million (about $20 million) in debt backed by RMB and Standard Bank, and Nesa Power secured $9 million of mezzanine debt from Maia Capital Partners.

The local capital base keeps growing. Infinite Partners closed R2.8 billion (about $169 million) for its second fund in October 2026, aimed at South African growth businesses, and UsPlus issued a R50 million social bond backed by the ALCB Fund. Our Q3 report has the full picture.

What does this page cover?

Companies match the country recorded on their Propel profile. Country does not imply incorporation, founder nationality or every market served. Counts include the financing types recorded by Propel, including equity, debt and grants. Unknown amounts are not zero. Dates retain their recorded precision. This is not a complete market census.

Listings follow Propel’s current public records. The dated context is editorial background, not a live market total. Secondary share sales are excluded from recorded funding here. Named backers are recorded participants; their inclusion does not identify them as the lead investor.
