Yaga has raised €4 million, about R80.4 million, in a pre-Series A round, MyBroadband reported on 21 October. Investors named are Specialist VC, H&M Group Ventures, Trind Ventures and Startup Wise Guys, along with a group of angel investors.

What Yaga does

Yaga runs an online marketplace for buying and selling pre-owned fashion. It uses an escrow-based payment system and localised logistics to protect buyers and sellers. Aune Aunapuu is chief executive. Yaga says it dominates online fashion resale in South Africa, and its products are typically 50% to 80% cheaper than new equivalents.

Traction

The company says it has doubled in size each year and has a team of 25 people. It reports a gross merchandise value run rate above €50 million, about R1 billion, and says it has given new life to more than six million fashion items. Sellers have earned over €80 million globally, about R1.6 billion.

Plans

The new funding follows €3.2 million raised before this round. It will be used to strengthen existing markets, enter new ones and build the platform further. "Our growth in South Africa proves that this is a global movement," said Aune Aunapuu, chief executive of Yaga.
