Waspito has won the $250,000 Grand LEAP Award at the LEAP tech conference in Riyadh, Disrupt Africa reported on 15 September. It was the largest individual prize at the event, which awards $1 million in equity-free prizes across seven categories.

Healthcare from a phone

Founded by Jean Lobe Lobe in 2020, Waspito lets users book instant video consultations with doctors from their smartphones. It also runs a mobile laboratory service: a technician visits the patient's home to collect samples, and the results are delivered digitally.

Waspito operates in Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire. It now serves about 1.1 million patients, with 2,100 doctors and more than 500 healthcare providers on the platform.

Building on its seed round

The prize follows earlier venture backing. In November 2023 Waspito raised $2.5 million, extending its seed round to $5.2 million.

Because the award is equity-free, Waspito adds capital without giving up any ownership.
