Vitara, a Ghana-based agribusiness, has secured a Pre-Series A investment from Acumen Fund, Empower Africa reported on 3 March. The amount was not disclosed. Acumen is described as a global impact investor, and Feyisola Adekogbe is its Investment Manager.

What Vitara does

The company buys shea nuts and soybeans from smallholder farmers and sells them to global buyers in food, cosmetics and specialty ingredients. Its TreeSyt digital platform tracks crops from farm to buyer, giving buyers verified supply chain data. Field teams also train farmers in sustainable farming, financial literacy and climate-smart practices. The company also operates under the name Sommalife.

Reach

Hundreds of thousands of farmers are registered on TreeSyt, and tens of thousands take part in sourcing programmes. Thousands of acres of shea parkland are under conservation, and tens of thousands of seedlings have been planted. Vitara aims to reach up to one million farmers by 2030.

Plans for the funding

The investment will go towards scaling Vitara's technology and expanding its shea butter processing capacity. The company also plans to extend its reach into more farming regions and deepen its community training and climate-resilience programmes.
