ValU has secured a loan of up to about $12 million (EGP 600 million) from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), according to a report published on 21 June. This is debt, not an equity round. The EBRD is also providing technical support to help ValU build and scale green consumer finance products.
What the money is for
ValU is a consumer finance and fintech company that offers instalment financing through its digital platform and merchant network. The loan will let households buy energy-efficient appliances, solar systems and other green technologies on flexible payment plans. It will also fund dedicated green finance products and better tracking of eligible green investments.
A first for the region
The deal is described as the EBRD's first partnership with a consumer finance company in Egypt and across the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region. ValU operates in Egypt. Karim Riad, chief financial officer of ValU, spoke about delivering the products "without compromising affordability or convenience".
