WeeTracker reported on 5 November that Sawa Energy has received an equity investment of 2.5 million euros, about $2.9 million, from EDFI ElectriFi. The EU-funded initiative made the investment through its Uganda Country Window. EDFI Management Company described the deal as a step towards phasing out polluting diesel power in the region.

What the company does

Sawa Energy, a Ugandan renewable energy firm, finances solar PV and battery systems for commercial and industrial clients, who sign long-term contracts at rates below grid tariffs. It aims to replace diesel generators. The company was founded in 2021, and Samuel Kaufman is its CEO.

Plans

The money will go towards scaling solar and energy storage for businesses in Uganda and Rwanda. The investment is also expected to help attract additional institutional capital, which WeeTracker presents as part of the wider goal of building the company's presence in both countries. Kaufman said the partnership will help Sawa "reduce emissions, lower costs, and improve productivity".
