Reme-D, an Egypt-based diagnostics company, has raised $500,000 from Global Innovation Fund, Launchbase Africa reported on 6 April. GIF is a new investor. Oman Technology Fund is an earlier backer, part of roughly $1 million raised before this investment.
What Reme-D makes
The company produces molecular (PCR) test kits that stay stable at room temperature, using freeze-drying and nanotechnology. The kits cover more than 30 diseases and are designed for places where cold chain logistics are unreliable. Founder and CEO Salma Tammam is a nanotechnology researcher. She said the technology was about "making molecular diagnostics truly accessible in resource-limited settings."
Traction
About 50,000 patients are tested each month across 92 hospitals and labs in Egypt, and more than 500,000 have been tested to date. Reme-D reports 95% sensitivity and 98% specificity, and says its diagnostics cost up to 40% less than imported alternatives. The kits are active in Egypt, Iraq, Sudan and Kenya.
Plans
The company intends to expand production and geographic reach, prepare a full commercial launch in Nigeria and Libya, and develop diagnostics for genetic disorders, cancer and maternal health.
