Reme-D has raised $1.45 million in a Pre-Series A round led by Anara Impact Capital, with Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures and other undisclosed investors taking part, Wamda reported on 20 July. Mohamed Hussain is a principal at Anara.
What Reme-D makes
Founded in 2023 and led by founder and CEO Salma Tammam, the company develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic tests for tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis and HPV. The tests are designed to be low cost and to tolerate harsh temperatures. Reme-D has a manufacturing facility in Cairo and supplies Egypt, Kenya and Sudan, with a focus on underserved African markets.
Traction
Reme-D has commercialised 30 diagnostic products and supplied more than 550,000 tests. Its team has grown from 5 to 50 people, and it has filed a US patent application. It also built a solar-powered mobile lab commissioned by the WHO Egypt country office.
Use of funds
The company plans to expand manufacturing capacity tenfold, including a move to a 1,500 sqm facility and equipment upgrades. It will also grow its regional reach and product range, and develop tests for genetic diseases and cancer. "Success means that patients in Africa and the Global South are no longer blocked," said Tammam.
