Orca Fraud, a South African startup building fraud prevention software for emerging markets, has raised a $2.35 million Seed round, Launch Base Africa reported on 9 March. Norrsken22 led the round. One Day Yes, Enza Capital and CV VC Africa also invested. Norrsken22 had anchored Orca's $550,000 pre-seed round in early 2024.

What Orca does

The company provides localised fraud detection and compliance tools for alternative payment methods, such as mobile wallets, merchant networks and agent-led banking. Thalia Pillay is CEO and Carla Wilby is co-founder. Both are former Stitch software engineers, and the company was founded in January 2024.

Traction

Orca says it processes between $4 billion and $5 billion in transaction volume each month and claims to handle transactions across more than 70 countries. Its clients include telecommunications companies, enterprise merchants and banks. Stronger than expected enterprise demand led the company to bring forward its seed raise.

What comes next

The new capital will go towards expanding the engineering team and scaling the platform to deal with more complex, localised fraud patterns. Orca also plans to keep expanding into new markets.
