Layn, an Egyptian 3D concrete printing startup, has raised a $1 million pre-seed round led by Dar Ventures, CairoScene reported on 1 May.

What Layn does

Layn was founded in 2024. It builds its own 3D printers and the proprietary concrete mixes they print with. Its Printing-as-a-Service model covers design, material sourcing, printing and installation. It has three verticals: Layn Urban Life for outdoor urban furniture, Layn Walls and Layn Buildings. The company says that because no moulds or formwork are needed, material use can fall by up to two thirds.

Team and traction

Zeyad Zein is co-founder and CEO, and Mohamed El-Hashemy is co-founder and CTO, with about a decade of 3D printing experience in the Middle East. Clients include SODIC, Orascom and Emaar. The company has about 60 employees and three Solaris v2 printers in operation. Zein told CairoScene the company has received M&A offers. He described the old approach to construction bluntly: "The traditional way won’t do it."

Expansion plans

Layn works from an office and a first factory, both in Cairo, and it serves Egypt first. Developers in Dubai have shown interest, and regional expansion is possible. Plans include a second printer expansion in Cairo and two more factories, on the Red Sea and the North Coast. The launch order will depend on demand.
