South Africa-founded clinical AI startup Healthleap has raised $38 million in combined seed and Series A funding from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital and Hummingbird Ventures. The company announced the funding on 7 October. It did not disclose how the amount splits between the two rounds or name a lead investor.

Founded in South Africa in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, Healthleap screens hospital patients for conditions that are often missed. Its platform reads each patient's full electronic health record every morning, flags risk, and sends risk scores into the workflows clinicians already use, so care teams can see which patients need attention first.

The company started with malnutrition and plans to extend screening to congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers and a range of hospital-acquired infections. The new capital will grow its engineering, sales, customer success and product teams.

"Our goal is to help improve care and save lives by identifying those conditions now," said chief executive Josiah Meyer. Alfred Lin of Sequoia said one hospital using the platform identified and treated 39 per cent more malnutrition cases.
