Happy Pay, a South African buy now, pay later startup, has raised a $5 million Seed round, Disrupt Africa reported on 23 March. Partech Africa led the round. Futuregrowth Asset Management, 4Di Capital, E4E, Equitable Ventures and Felix Strategic Investment also took part.
How the model works
Happy Pay offers interest-free instalment payments. It connects merchants with shoppers who are ready to buy, and it is paid for by the merchants and brands that gain from the resulting sales. That means consumers pay no interest or fees. Wesley Billett is co-founder and CEO. Billett said: "Our mission is simple, to make cash-flow management free for consumers."
Users
The company has more than 600,000 registered users.
Plans for the funding
Happy Pay will use the money to expand its merchant partnerships and grow distribution across digital and physical channels. It is also developing an AI-driven recommendations and ads engine, and building risk and fraud infrastructure as it scales.
