Cue, an AI customer service company founded in Cape Town, has raised R82 million, about $5 million, in a round co-led by Knife Capital and FAM Investments. Condia reported on 15 July. The round was not named, but it is Cue's largest yet, following a $500,000 pre-seed in 2023 and a $2 million seed in 2024.

What Cue does

Cue builds an AI customer service platform whose agents handle customer queries from start to finish without human help. The company began by helping businesses manage customer chats on WhatsApp and other messaging apps.

Traction

Cue runs customer conversations for more than 500 businesses across automotive, retail, insurance, finance and education. It handles over 500 million messages and conversations a year. Annual recurring revenue grew by more than 160% in the last financial year, and its current AI agents resolve more than 60% of conversations on their own. "We’re at an inflection point for AI in customer service," said CEO Richard Nischk.

Plans

The money will go to engineering, including voice infrastructure and security, and to sales and marketing in the UK and South Africa. Cue also plans to enter new markets.
