Proparco, the private-sector financing arm of the AFD Group, announced on 25 November that it has made an equity investment in BasiGo. The amount was not disclosed.
What the company does
BasiGo provides electric bus solutions to public transport operators. It assembles buses locally, builds and runs charging infrastructure, and works with operators to offer an alternative to diesel buses. The company is based in Nairobi and operates in Kenya and Rwanda. Jit Bhattacharya is CEO and co-founder, and the company was founded in 2021.
Traction
The company reports 100 electric buses in operation across 29 operators, with about 40 percent annual operating cost savings for operators. The buses have driven 1,437,591 km and carried over 9 million passengers, avoiding more than 3,000 tCO2e to date.
Plans
Bhattacharya names the next priorities as scaling local assembly, expanding the charging network and advancing the Road to 1000 electric bus target. He said the investment "is a powerful endorsement of the future we are building for African cities". Each electric bus that replaces a diesel bus avoids more than 50 tCO2e a year.
