Startups in Kenya

Kenya is East Africa's main startup market and, in Propel's records, the continent's home of asset-backed finance: pay-as-you-go energy, electric motorbikes and agricultural equipment funded largely with debt. This page lists the Kenyan companies we record, most recently funded first, with every round traced to its source.

Understanding the ecosystem

Kenyan startups raised $84.7 million between July and September 2026, as counted in our Q3 report, up from $32.3 million in the second quarter. Most of it went to companies that finance physical assets rather than software: electric motorbikes, solar systems and irrigation equipment, usually funded with debt. SunCulture's $10 million securitisation backed by Mirova and PowerGen's $5 million mezzanine investment from All On, for its Nigerian expansion, are typical of the quarter.

Kenya also attracts a different kind of cheque. DEG, the German development finance institution, made ten small grants in the quarter, seven of them to Kenyan companies, continuing a run that made it the most active name in our records in the first half of the year. Our Q3 report has the full picture.

What does this page cover?

Companies match the country recorded on their Propel profile. Country does not imply incorporation, founder nationality or every market served. Counts include the financing types recorded by Propel, including equity, debt and grants. Unknown amounts are not zero. Dates retain their recorded precision. This is not a complete market census.

Listings follow Propel’s current public records. The dated context is editorial background, not a live market total. Secondary share sales are excluded from recorded funding here. Named backers are recorded participants; their inclusion does not identify them as the lead investor.
